Luma isn’t a store. It isn’t a subscription. It isn’t an ad channel with a wallpaper. It’s a computer that works for the person sitting in front of it.

We think computing has gotten stuck between two bad choices. On one side you’ll find polished, integrated systems that work beautifully, as long as you stay inside the lines drawn for you. On the other is open computing: decades of incredible work that too often ends up fragmented, inconsistent, and incomplete.
We realized that those don’t have to be the only choices.
Luma is our attempt at something different. We’re building one platform across your computer, tablet, and phone. Something coherent and thoughtfully built, but still yours (in every single way). You can change it, rebuild it, contribute to it, or ignore all of that and just use it.
We’re definitely not starting from scratch, and we won’t pretend we are. Luma stands on decades of open-source work. Our job is to bring those pieces together, make hard decisions, build what is missing and move quickly when something isn’t good enough.
We’re a small team. We don’t have shareholders or investors telling us what this needs to become. We’re building the tech we’ve spent years wishing someone else would build.
We hope computers can be personal again.

All of the code is public, from the kernel to the wallpapers. If we ever go somewhere you do not want to follow, you can take the whole thing and keep going.

We will not restart your computer without asking, pull a feature you rely on, or expire a license. The machine you bought stays the machine you bought.
