Notes as plain files, not a silo

Not plannedElise FontaineMar 17, 2026Suite34 comments

A notes app whose notes are Markdown files in a folder I choose.

No database, no export step. A folder of .md files with a good editor over it.

Not planned

Write is getting a folder mode that opens a directory of Markdown files as a sidebar of notes. That covers the problem here without a second editor to maintain, so a separate notes app is not planned. If the folder mode ships and still misses what you need, reopen this idea and say what is missing.

Voted. Every notes app I have used has eventually held my notes hostage.

Would the Write app not do this if it had a folder mode? Seems like a smaller change than a new app.

Not planned, and here is why. Write is getting a folder mode that opens a directory of Markdown files as a sidebar of notes, which covers this without adding a second editor to maintain. If that ships and still misses what you need, reopen this and say what is missing.

That is a fair answer. I will wait for the folder mode and come back if it is not it.
